What food safety certifications do you actually require from Asian suppliers?
Hi everyone 👋 — this one is for the importers in the room.
When you source food from Asia, which certifications do you treat as non-negotiable, and which ones do you only check when the buyer’s market demands them? I see suppliers offering everything from ISO 22000 to HACCP, BRCGS, FSSC 22000, organic EU/USDA, halal and kosher — and the list keeps growing. But certificates are not all equal, and some are far more meaningful than others.

What the certificates actually mean
| Certificate | Audited by | Recognised by |
|---|---|---|
| HACCP | Supplier’s own plan / local certifier | Baseline requirement worldwide |
| ISO 22000 | Third-party registrar | International standard |
| FSSC 22000 | GFSI-benchmarked third party | GFSI; strong EU/US recognition |
| BRCGS | GFSI-benchmarked third party | Strongest with UK/EU retail buyers |
| Halal / Kosher | Religious certifying bodies | Market-dependent, but mandatory for some channels |
| Organic | Accredited bodies (EU/USDA/NOP) | Only if you sell into organic channels |
My take
I would say HACCP is table stakes, a GFSI-benchmarked scheme (FSSC 22000 or BRCGS) is what serious importers should look for, and halal/kosher/organic are market questions, not quality questions. Also worth asking: is the certificate still valid, and does it cover the actual production line you’re buying from? I’ve seen “ISO 22000 certified” factories where the certificate applied to a different site. 😅
So — what’s on your must-have list? Do you run your own audits on top of certificates? And has a missing certificate ever killed a deal for you? Share your experience below — this is exactly the kind of intel that saves everyone a bad shipment. 👇
