Few sweets carry as much nostalgia as White Rabbit Creamy Candy. With its signature red, white and blue wax-paper wrapper and its soft, milky, chewy centre, this Chinese candy has been a childhood staple since the 1940s — and today it is sold in more than 50 countries. For importers and distributors, it is also a masterclass in how a single nostalgic product can power cross-border retail success.
A Brief History
White Rabbit was created in 1943 in Shanghai, inspired by the creamy milk candies of Europe. It was originally sold by ABC Confectionery and later became a flagship product of Guan Sheng Yuan — one of China’s oldest confectionery companies, with roots dating to 1918. The candy’s mascot, a rabbit, appears on every wrapper, and the paper liner — which doubled as a sticker when rolled up — became a cherished part of childhood.
In 1972, White Rabbit sweets accompanied the Shanghai delegation on a historic diplomatic visit, cementing the brand’s status as a piece of modern Chinese cultural history.
What Makes White Rabbit Candy Unique
- Soft, chewy texture — closer to a marshmallow-flavoured milk chew than a hard candy.
- Rich milk flavour — made with milk powder, sugar and glucose syrup.
- Iconic packaging — a thin edible rice-paper inner wrapper and printed wax outer wrap.
- Evolving range — original, chocolate, coffee, matcha, cereal and many regional flavours.
