Sorbitol is hygroscopic, and that single property causes most of the storage problems buyers encounter: bags that set hard, powders that cake into lumps, and liquid that crystallises in cold weather. None of these are defects in the material itself — they are handling failures. This article explains why they happen and how to design storage and handling procedures that keep sorbitol free-flowing and within specification.
Why Sorbitol Takes Up Moisture
Sorbitol is a polyol with multiple hydroxyl groups that readily form hydrogen bonds with water. When crystalline powder or granulated sorbitol is exposed to humid air, it absorbs moisture at the surface, which can dissolve a thin layer and then recrystallise into bridges between particles. The result is caking and clumping, which disrupts dosing and blending. The rate depends on relative humidity, temperature, particle size and how long the material is exposed.
Fine powders with high surface area are more vulnerable than coarse grades, and crushed or milled sorbitol is more likely to cake than the original crystal.
Packaging That Protects the Product
The first line of defence is the package. Options and their trade-offs include:
| Packaging | Moisture protection | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-wall paper bags with PE liner | Good if liner is intact | 25 kg powder, dry warehouses |
| Woven PP bags with inner PE bag | Moderate | Cost-sensitive dry goods |
| HDPE drums / fiber drums | Very good | Pharma and smaller lots |
| IBC totes (liquid) | Sealed, good | 70% solution, bulk users |
Whatever the format, the closure matters as much as the material. A torn liner or an unsealed drum lets humid air in and the product can deteriorate within weeks.
Warehouse Conditions That Work
Aim for a cool, dry store with relative humidity kept low — commonly below about 60% where the climate allows — and avoid placing pallets directly against external walls or on damp floors. Keep sorbitol away from steam lines, wash-down areas and open doors. Where humidity is unavoidably high, use dehumidification or keep product in sealed liners and rotate stock quickly.
Pallets should be raised off the floor and stacked so that air can circulate. FIFO rotation prevents older lots from sitting through multiple humid seasons.
Liquid Sorbitol and Cold Weather
Liquid 70% sorbitol solution can thicken or crystallise when stored below its cloud point, which becomes a real issue in winter or in unheated tanks. Once crystals form, the container may need gentle warming in a heated room or with a drum heater — never open flame — and mixing to redissolve. Heated or insulated storage tanks prevent the problem in the first place. Repeated heating and cooling cycles should be minimised because they can drive colour development.
Good Handling Practice
- Keep bags sealed until the moment of use; reseal part-used bags immediately.
- Use clean, dry scoops and avoid leaving the container open during weighing.
- Practice FIFO and record lot numbers for traceability.
- Store separately from strong odours and from materials that release moisture.
- Inspect incoming lots for torn liners, moisture damage or caking before acceptance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can caked sorbitol be used?
Often yes, if it still meets the specification. Break up lumps gently and verify assay and moisture; but if the material has absorbed significant moisture or is contaminated, reject the lot and raise it with the supplier.
What humidity should a sorbitol warehouse target?
Lower is better. Keeping relative humidity below roughly 60% and temperature moderate will slow moisture pickup considerably. The exact target depends on your packaging and climate.
Why does liquid sorbitol crystallise?
Cold temperatures reduce solubility and can trigger crystal formation. Store 70% solution above its cloud point and warm it gently if crystals appear.
Does particle size affect caking?
Yes. Fine or milled sorbitol has more surface area and cakes faster than coarse, well-formed crystals. Choose the grade that matches your handling system.
