Sorbitol is one of the most versatile humectants in personal care and pharmaceuticals. In toothpaste it keeps the paste from drying out; in medicines it sweetens and stabilises syrups. Because these applications sit close to the body, the grade and purity matter more than the price.
Grades and forms
- Liquid sorbitol (70%): economical, easy to pump, standard for toothpaste.
- Crystalline sorbitol: dry form for tableting and dry blends.
- Non-crystallising sorbitol: sorbitol with sorbitan, stays liquid and clear.
Humectancy and stability
Sorbitol holds moisture steadily, which is why toothpaste stays soft and gels do not dry at the edge. It also has a mild sweetness and a low freezing point, useful in liquid formulations. For pharmaceuticals, consistent moisture uptake protects the dosage form over its shelf life.
Purity and microbiology
Pharma and oral-care grades demand tight limits on heavy metals, residual sugars and microbial counts. Source from suppliers who can provide a full certificate of analysis and a documented pharmacopoeia grade where required.
Regulatory and documentation
Confirm the grade against the destination market’s pharmacopoeia or personal-care standards, and keep the COA and safety data on file per lot. In these sectors, documentation is part of the product.
