Ask several suppliers for “sorbitol” and you may receive several different materials. The molecule is the same — a six-carbon sugar alcohol produced by hydrogenating glucose — but food, personal-care and pharmaceutical grades are built to different specifications and backed by different paperwork. Using personal-care material in a food or oral-care line, or the reverse, is a quality and compliance risk that a buyer can avoid with one well-worded question at the RFQ stage.

The cost is not only the rejected material; it is the lost production slot, the investigation and, in cross-border trade, the possibility of a customs or regulatory hold when the declared grade does not match the destination standard.

2. Name the grade and the standard you are buying against, such as a food-additive monograph or a named pharmacopoeia.
3. Ask for a batch-specific certificate of analysis, not a generic specification sheet.
4. Confirm the physical form, particle size and packaging format.
5. Check supporting certificates such as ISO, HACCP, Halal, Kosher and, for pharma, GMP evidence.
