A sourcing headache to share 🍭:
Sorbitol shipments — who else has fought moisture and shelf-life issues? Sorbitol is hygroscopic: it pulls water out of the air. In humid climates or after a long ocean voyage, powder can cake, and sorbitol solution can drift in solids. I’d love to hear what actually works.
Where sorbitol problems come from
- 💧 Humidity at the factory — caking starts before the container even leaves.
- 📦 Breathable packaging — standard PP bags are not a moisture barrier.
- 🌡️ Temperature swings — condensation inside the pack during transit.
- 🧪 Solids drift in liquid sorbitol — brix changes over time if stored badly.

My rules after a few painful shipments
- 📋 Specify the packaging in the PO — liner type and closure.
- 🧊 Never let the container sit in the sun at origin or destination.
- ⚖️ Weigh at arrival — absorbed moisture adds weight and changes solids.
- 🔬 Test solids on liquid sorbitol — a brix check is minutes and worth it.

Moisture is the battle. We spec alu-lined bags + a desiccant strip and it ended the caking. Also demand the container be ventilated, not sealed — condensation inside the door was our real enemy.
Weight at arrival changed our whole process. Absorbed moisture showed as 1.5% weight gain on one shipment and the solids were off. Now we weigh every container before accepting. Cheap insurance.
