Finding a reliable sugar syrup supplier — what actually worked for you?
Let’s trade war stories 💬 — specifically about sourcing sugar syrups and sweeteners.
Syrups are a weird category to buy. They’re heavy, they’re liquid, they thicken in cold weather, and they’re prone to crystallization and quality drift between batches. Over the years I’ve been burned more by “cheap syrup” deals than by any other food commodity. So I want to hear from you:
What actually worked when you found a reliable syrup or sweetener supplier? And what red flags should a new importer watch for?

What I wish someone had told me
- 🧪 Test every batch, not the first batch. A beautiful COA on sample one says nothing about batch twelve.
- 🌡️ Check the dry substance (Brix). A 1% Brix drift changes sweetness, cost and storage behaviour.
- 📄 Ask how they handle winter. If the supplier has no heating/insulation plan, your container will be a block of honey by arrival.
- 🛢️ Verify the drum/tote standard. Food-grade liners and clean valves are non-negotiable; rusty fittings are a full-lot loss.
- 📏 Confirm MOQ stability. The supplier who quotes a low MOQ and quietly raises it after your first order is a one-trip supplier.
| Red flag | Green flag |
|---|---|
| No retained samples kept for each lot | Keeps reference samples for 12+ months |
| Vague specs (“high quality syrup”) | Written spec: Brix, DE, pH, colour, viscosity |
| Only email, no video/plant evidence | Offers a factory tour or live video check |
| Payment first, everything else later | Sample + COA + contract before deposit |

Over to you: what supplier discovery method worked best in your market — trade shows, referrals, platforms? And how many samples do you order before committing to a container? Share below, and let’s build a supplier shortlist everyone can use. 👇
