Few Chinese condiments have travelled as far as chili crisp (辣椒油). What started as a Sichuan pantry staple is now a global grocery category — and buyers are scrambling for authentic supply. Here’s what makes the product, and how to source it right. 🌶️
What defines a good chili crisp
- 🌶️ The chili base — dried chilies fried in oil until fragrant, never burnt.
- 🥜 The crunch — fried garlic, shallots, peanuts or soybeans suspended in the oil.
- 🧂 The salt & umami — balance is everything; MSG-free options are winning in export.
- 🫙 The oil quality — high-oleic soybean or rapeseed oil keeps it stable and clean.
| Export spec | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| Shelf life | 12–18 months ambient |
| Acid value of oil | Low — signals fresh oil, no rancidity |
| Glass vs PET | Glass premium, PET for cost-sensitive channels |
| Labelling | Allergens (peanut/soy) must be declared |
| Heat level | Wide spread — from mild to “handle with care” |
Why buyers are ordering now
Chili crisp rides three trends at once: heat-forward eating, Asian pantry cooking, and the “finishing condiment” movement (drizzle over eggs, pizza, noodles). That’s a rare triple alignment — and importers who move early secure the retail slots. 📈
Sourcing checklist
- 🧪 Verify oil freshness on COA (acid and peroxide values).
- 🌶️ Specify chili origin and variety for consistent heat.
- 🥜 Confirm allergen handling lines are segregated.
- 🫙 Check jar vacuum sealing — air is the enemy of fried garlic.
- 🚢 Plan glass-freight packaging (corrugated trays, dividers) from day one.
From Shandong to Sichuan, our condiment suppliers bottle chili crisp for private label and OEM alike. Send your spec sheet and target retail price — we’ll shortlist factories that can actually hit it. 🌶️
