# Sweetener Synergy: Combining Polyols and Intense Sweeteners

Few sugar replacers work well alone. The art of modern reformulation is synergy: combining a bulk polyol with one or more intense sweeteners so each covers the other’s weakness.

Why blends win
--------------

Intense sweeteners supply sweetness without bulk; polyols supply bulk, body and a sugar-like mouthfeel. Combined, they approach the taste of sugar far more closely than either alone.

Practical pairings
------------------

- Erythritol plus stevia for a clean, low-calorie base.
- Maltitol plus a touch of sucralose for chocolate.
- Allulose with erythritol for sugar-like browning and body.

**Practical tip:** adjust sweetness in small steps and re-taste; intense sweeteners can have a delayed finish that only shows up in the aftertaste.

Cost and label
--------------

Blending can lower total cost by using less of the expensive bulk sweetener, and it can improve the label by reducing polyol levels. Model both taste and cost before choosing the final system.
