# Sourcing Frozen Ready Meals from China: HACCP, Cold Chain and MOQ

Frozen ready meals are one of the fastest-growing convenience categories, and China has become a serious supplier for private labels across Asia, the Middle East and beyond. The technical bar is high because the product is only as good as its cold chain.

Certification and audits
------------------------

Start with HACCP, and expect GFSI-benchmarked schemes such as BRCGS or FSSC 22000 for serious retail customers. Ask about the supplier’s own audit history and their willingness to allow a third-party audit. A supplier that resists transparency is a risk signal.

Cold-chain integrity
--------------------

- Freezer temperature: typically -18 °C or colder throughout storage and transport.
- Reefer containers: verified pre-trip inspection and continuous temperature logging.
- Product temperature at loading and at delivery: recorded and comparable.

Any temperature excursion shortens shelf life and risks texture and food safety. Build a requirement for data loggers into the shipment terms.

**Buyer tip:** request a retain sample of the exact lot you will receive, and taste it after your own thaw cycle, not the supplier’s.

Labelling and market fit
------------------------

Frozen meals carry detailed labelling: ingredients, allergens, nutrition, cooking instructions and storage. Recipes may need adjustment for local taste and for regulatory limits on additives. Start with products that travel well and reheat reliably.

MOQ and development
-------------------

Frozen lines often need meaningful MOQs because of the cooking and freezing setup. Budget for sample rounds, a trial production and a stability check before committing to volume. Once the process is proven, the category scales efficiently.
