# Snack Packaging Films: Barrier, Seal and Shelf-Life Trade-offs

The film is the last line of defence between a crisp snack and a stale one. Choosing a structure is a trade-off between barrier, cost, print quality and machine performance.

Barrier properties
------------------

Oxygen and moisture transmission rates decide shelf life. Metalised and foil-laminated films dramatically slow both, which matters most for oil-rich or moisture-sensitive snacks. Ask for the actual OTR and WVTR figures.

Seal and machine performance
----------------------------

- Seals must hold through contamination by crumbs or oil.
- Film must run at line speed without stretching or tearing.
- Print and matte/gloss finishes affect perceived quality.

**Buyer tip:** validate the film in a real shipment, not just a lab test; transport and climate stress a pack differently.

Balancing cost and shelf life
-----------------------------

A thicker barrier costs more but may allow a longer shelf life or a wider distribution area. Match the structure to the product’s realistic journey, not an ideal one.
