# Frozen vs ambient shipping: how do you decide for your market?

Okay, a question for the logistics people among us 🚚:

**How do you decide between frozen and ambient shipping for Asian food products?** I keep seeing two camps. One buys everything refrigerated “just to be safe,” and pays for it. The other saves on freight and ends up with texture or shelf-life complaints. There has to be a smarter way to make the call.

![Container yard with ambient and reefer cargo](https://liangdusyrup.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_20230730_152440.jpg)Reefer freight can cost 20–40% more than dry — but a warm, spoiled load costs 100%.What actually decides it
------------------------

From what I’ve seen, four factors should drive the decision — not habit:

FactorAmbient (dry) OKNeeds reefer / cold chainWater activityLow (crisps, dried snacks, powders)High (sauces, ready meals)Stability at 25–30°CProven stable for the voyageMelts, separates or spoilsTarget shelf lifeLong, forgivingShort; every degree shortens itBuyer’s storageAmbient warehouseFrozen/chilled warehouse onward

The compromise route
--------------------

A middle path many importers use: keep the product **ambient but temperature-logged**, with a clear spec that defines the acceptable range. For genuinely sensitive goods there is no shortcut — go reefer and log it. The mistake is treating every product the same way. 🔀

Have you ever paid reefer rates and still lost a claim? Curious to hear what actually works in the real world. 👇
